On Line Reviews By Mike Ramey

“Many people become so comfortable in sin that they cannot perceive that they’re being illegally held.”
–Pastor Charles Washington, Jr., Author
“God is Bigger Than A Game.”

If you want a better class of book to give your son on the realities of sports and faith in God through Jesus Christ, then you’ll want to give the once over to a work by Pastor Charles Washington, Jr. It’s called: “God is Bigger Than A Game--He Has A Plan For You!” (2015, 132 pages, Outskirts Press)

Washington--himself a former professional football player--details his struggles and rise from the ranks of Pee-Wee football, to High School, College and the Pros, and how he had been ‘duped’ into thinking that the only thing that mattered in his life was being involved in sports. Washington had all the symptoms that many of the pro-athletes have today. However, once he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, Washington learned that there was more to life than football. God DID have a plan for him.

The book comes with a lot of scripture citations, many of them from the KJV. However, it is the advice that this now Pastor gives out about his former career--from the spiritual and natural perspectives--that will give one pause as to how to steer their sons (and daughters) should the ‘sports bug’ bite them. Sports are just an activity; a means of keeping fit…NOT the be all and end all to life. Especially to one’s eternal destiny.

“God is Bigger Than A Game--He Has A Plan For You!” is a solid contribution by Washington to the ongoing discussion of youth in sports--either in urban or suburban settings. In his view, without a firm spiritual foundation from God cemented into the lives of young men who are heading off to what they see as a life in a ‘game’, they can easily become hurt, lost and used by the sports system. This book belongs in the hands of many families--and coaches, to provide a realistic look at a system that needs a spiritual revival.
